One of the fantastic features of the iPhone is the built-in iPhone dictionary. This application works on the same basis as a normal dictionary, but without the definitions. As you are making use of the text facilities on the iPhone the dictionary constantly monitors your typing and compares words you type with words contained within the dictionary, as well as names in your address book.

The moment the dictionary identifies a word and finds a match, the result will be displayed right beneath the word you have typed. If you wish to make use of the suggested word, simply tap the spacebar to accept the word.

If you do not accept the word suggested by the dictionary application, your typed word will be added to the iPhone dictionary automatically by the dictionary application. The disadvantage of this iPhone application is the fact that in future, this added word, will be used by the dictionary as a suggestion, whether it is correct or a misspelled error.

To the flipside of the coin, the dictionary application was also programmed to delete certain unused words after a period of time. This becomes useful if you allowed a spelling mistake to become part of the dictionary to be deleted after a period of time if you do not make use of it.

Many users may complain about the fact that the dictionary may contain too many spelling errors and they do not wish to wait until the words are deleted automatically. There is no need for concern, as you can easily reset the dictionary.

Manually resetting the dictionary:

In order to reset the dictionary manually, simply follow the these steps:

1.    From the Home screen tap on the Settings icon.
2.    Next tap on General and then on Reset.
3.    Now tap Reset Keyboard Dictionary.

Your dictionary will now be reset and all those unwanted words deleted.

Hi. I have 3.0 on my 3G iphone and resetting the dictionary will no get rid of one of the words it has “learnt”. Every time I type “me” it replaces with M&E (the name of one of my customers).

Is there any other way to delete selective words from the dictionary? I have tried typing “me” hundreds of times, rejecting the suggested M^E, hoping it will “unlearn” but no joy

I would love to delete the word “fir” from my dictionary. I type in by accident when I mean “for” and it never, ever corrects to “for.” I reset my dictionary and it’s still there. I am 100% certain I will never have to type “fir” in an email, text or status update, but this persistent word seems to be in the permanent dictionary. So aggravating!

Completely agree with JM. I really want to delete “fir” and also “lynch”. I will never lynch anyone and probably never need a fir tree. If I do, I’ll override the suggestion then!
