It is estimated that 20% of us will come down with one form of depression over our lifetime that will be severe enough to require medical treatment. This type of depression symptoms include sadness and hopelessness that makes it very hard to carry out normal day to day life. Actually normal seems almost impossible to obtain once you slip into a deep depression.

There is some hope. Researchers have discovered that poor nutrition is one controllable factor. Poor nutrition does not cause depression but if you can correct a deficiency, one can benefit while trying to get over depression. If you are suffering from depression you should seek a doctor as a diet certainly can’t replace professional medical treatment. If you feel depressed, be sure to consult a doctor but while you are recovering from depression, here are some diet tips to help you overcome your depression.

It is believed by experts that vitamin B can give you a serotonin boot, which is a hormone your body uses to regulate your mood.

Selenium can improve your mood. Studies show that people who take 100 micrograms of selenium per day feel less tired and depressed than those who did not take it.

Other deficiencies of riboflavin and thiamin is also linked to depression. Doctors suggest eating foods that contain riboflavin and thiamin in its natural form. Riboflavin rich foods consists of dairy products, green leafy vegetables, eggs and yes, even breakfast cereal.

Thiamin rich foods consist of enriched bread, peas, oranges, milk, pecans and rice to name a few. Just by adjusting your diet to include some of these foods in your every day life can reduce your risk of depression. If you are already depressed, then you can give these foods a try and see if they lessen the effects of depression. Always consult your doctor when making any diet changes while being treated for depression.

We have all become accustomed to swallow a pill for everything, which is wrong, but yes, you can always get a well balanced diet the natural way which is always going to be more healthy for your body.
